As mentioned above, Noel hitchhiked across Canada, carrying with him, nothing more than his guitar and the clothes on his back (that's a given), plus an extra T-shirt, a pair of socks, and a pair of jeans. He was on his way to Dawson City. The evening before his departure from Ottawa, Ont. Canada, he was inspired to write this song while sitting alongside the Queensway in the ditch. 

By the time he arrived in BC in Western Canada, he had met, had conversations with, and sang his songs for hundreds (actually, it was thousands), of people.
