In 1995, sensing inevitable homelessness, Noel began writing a 13-minute, 7-second song called "Drifting Lost at Sea." It took 2 1/2 years to finish—and 22 years to understand what he had written, during which time, he did become homeless.

The writing of this song came to him in spurts. For months, one verse in the middle of the song plagued him. He'd imagined the words he'd just written were to simply remind him of the melody change that had taken place. He planned to rewrite the verse because the words made no sense. That caused him to struggle with the remainder of the song.

Following a long day of being a street person, he found himself in great bodily pain brought on by lack of sleep, stress, and excessive need to survive. All day long he sensed the song would be finished that day. But then, after many failed attempts to finish writing the song later that night, it happened. In the early morning hours of that day in December, '97, after repeatedly looking for a sign within the lyrics sheets spread out in front of him, he would retreat in an attempt to fall asleep, only to get up again and again in disappointment. He eventually became wide awake, having been shown the missing piece to the puzzling lyrics in his sleep. The verse he'd planned to revise didn't contain his words to someone else. It was GOD's words to him. It was revealed to him that he'd been having a two-way written conversation with GOD for the past 30 months without knowing it.

With that revelation, he dragged himself out of bed for the ninth and final time. A complete transformation came over him. His body pain subsided. He wasn't in his own body or mind anymore. Without thought, he simply wrote. The melody became changed on its own. The final two verses that completed the bewildering story flowed through him—not from him.

The last line terrified him: "Wear the crown, for you are the sign".

He didn't understand what those words meant. He now faced a new struggle of trying to figure out their meaning. And its meaning wouldn't begin to be revealed to him until another 22 years were to transpire. That was 2019. However, there was still more to it …

Let's back up to December, 2000. Arriving at the end of a 5-year self-imposed deadline to make it as a songwriter, Noel was ready to quit. Then he became inspired to write "Left Unread" — the song that was to change his life forever.
