The Stories Behind the Songs of Noel Carol

P R O L O G U E

What you're about to read cost 30 years to deliver—and believing it might cost everything.

In 1995, sensing inevitable homelessness, Noel began writing a 13-minute, 7-second song called "Drifting Lost at Sea." It took 2.5 years to finish—and 22 years to understand what he had written, during which time, he did become homeless.

For months, one verse in the middle of the song plagued him. He planned to rewrite it because it made no sense—until he woke up one night with the missing piece to the puzzling lyrics. The verse wasn't his words to someone else. It was God's words to him. He'd been having a two-way written conversation with God for 30 months without knowing it.

With that revelation, he dragged himself out of bed for the ninth and final time that night. A complete transformation came over him. His body pain subsided. He wasn't in his own body or mind anymore. Without thought, he simply wrote. The music changed on its own. The final verses flowed through him—not from him.

The last line terrified him: "Wear the crown, for you are the sign".

He didn't understand it. He wouldn't understand it for 22 years.

In 2000, at the end of a 5-year self-imposed deadline to make it as a songwriter, Noel was ready to quit. Then he became inspired to write "Left Unread" — the song that was to change his life forever. The moment he finished writing the chorus, the inspiration to write the book of the same title was revealed to him. The title was a given: LEFT UNREAD The Stories Behind the Songs of Noel Carol.

But 22 years were to elapse before he sat down to write it.

The songs were blueprints to a life he hadn't yet lived. This book is proof that every word came true. And the pattern of 22 years—twice—wasn't an accident.

What began as the story of a struggling songwriter was to become a prophetic message that took 30 years to deliver—one he's willing to die for if it were to come to that.

No two artists take the same road on their individual journeys toward their artistic destinations. Although many artists might employ a mapped-out approach, some artists simply wing it by taking an accidental one. The latter is true in the artistic journey of Noel Carol.

Left Unread is a true story of an eight-year-old boy with wild dreams, the primary one being that of becoming a rock star. While many boys of his age grow up dreaming of becoming a fireman or perhaps even of becoming a professional athlete, neither of those ambitions ever became part of Noel's dreams. Both his heart and mind had already become focused on singing and playing guitar.

But life doesn't necessarily unfold in the manner that a child might perceive it unfolding. Financial crises, broken relationships, poor choices, and spiritual warfare—all of it got in the way. The question wasn't whether Noel would face obstacles. The question was whether he'd survive them.

This is a story of hard times meeting strength of character, ridiculous failures meeting unimaginable successes, and truth confronting deception. It's about what happens when prophecy, music, and faith collide—and what it costs to deliver a message 30 years in the making.

If you're someone who has invested yourself in the pursuit of an ambitious dream or if you're struggling to discover your true purpose, this book will reveal a key element you may have been overlooking. The Stories Behind the Songs of Noel Carol affirms that he will not end up like some book on a shelf – Left Unread! No, he'll just write the book instead.
